Nonnegative Combinations of Finite Measures and Their Integrals

A nonnegative linear combination of two finite measures is a finite measure, and integrals against it are the same combination of the integrals against the two measures, both for nonnegative measurable functions and for functions integrable against both.

Statement

In the setting of Radon Measures on Locally Compact Metric Spaces: Standing Notation, let (X,F)(X,\mathcal{F}) be a measurable space, let μ1\mu_{1} and μ2\mu_{2} be finite measures on (X,F)(X,\mathcal{F}), and let a1,a2∈Ra_{1},a_{2}\in\mathbb{R} with a1,a2≥0a_{1},a_{2}\ge0. Let a1μ1+a2μ2a_{1}\mu_{1}+a_{2}\mu_{2} be the function on F\mathcal{F} with

(a1μ1+a2μ2)(A)=a1μ1(A)+a2μ2(A)(A∈F).(a_{1}\mu_{1}+a_{2}\mu_{2})(A)=a_{1}\mu_{1}(A)+a_{2}\mu_{2}(A)\qquad(A\in\mathcal{F}).

A finite measure. a1μ1+a2μ2a_{1}\mu_{1}+a_{2}\mu_{2} is a finite measure on (X,F)(X,\mathcal{F}).

Integrals. For every g∈M+g\in\mathcal{M}^{+},

∫g d(a1μ1+a2μ2)=a1∫g dμ1+a2∫g dμ2,\int g\,d(a_{1}\mu_{1}+a_{2}\mu_{2})=a_{1}\int g\,d\mu_{1}+a_{2}\int g\,d\mu_{2},

with the sum and the products formed in [0,∞][0,\infty]. Every f∈L1(μ1)∩L1(μ2)f\in\mathcal{L}^{1}(\mu_{1})\cap\mathcal{L}^{1}(\mu_{2}) lies in L1(a1μ1+a2μ2)\mathcal{L}^{1}(a_{1}\mu_{1}+a_{2}\mu_{2}), and

∫f d(a1μ1+a2μ2)=a1∫f dμ1+a2∫f dμ2.\int f\,d(a_{1}\mu_{1}+a_{2}\mu_{2})=a_{1}\int f\,d\mu_{1}+a_{2}\int f\,d\mu_{2}.
