Radon Measures on Locally Compact Metric Spaces: Standing Notation

Combines the notation for locally compact metric spaces and compactly supported functions with that for measures and the Lebesgue integral, and fixes the terms Borel measure and finite signed Borel measure, the setwise operations on finite signed measures, and the Jordan decomposition notation.

Statement

Base. This setting extends Locally Compact Metric Spaces and Compactly Supported Functions: Standing Notation and Measurable Functions and the Lebesgue Integral: Standing Notation: their conventions and notation are in force.

Borel measures. For a metric space (X,d)(X,d), B(X)\mathcal{B}(X) is its Borel σ\sigma-algebra, as in the base. A Borel measure on XX means a measure on the measurable space (X,B(X))(X,\mathcal{B}(X)), and a finite signed Borel measure on XX means a finite signed measure on (X,B(X))(X,\mathcal{B}(X)).

Finite signed measures. Let (X,F)(X,\mathcal{F}) be a measurable space. M(X,F)M(X,\mathcal{F}) denotes the set of finite signed measures on (X,F)(X,\mathcal{F}). For ν,ν′∈M(X,F)\nu,\nu'\in M(X,\mathcal{F}) and c∈Rc\in\mathbb{R}, ν+ν′\nu+\nu' and cνc\nu are formed by the pointwise operations on RF\mathbb{R}^{\mathcal{F}}, the set of functions F→R\mathcal{F}\to\mathbb{R}:

(ν+ν′)(A)=ν(A)+ν′(A),(cν)(A)=c ν(A)(A∈F).(\nu+\nu')(A)=\nu(A)+\nu'(A),\qquad(c\nu)(A)=c\,\nu(A)\qquad(A\in\mathcal{F}).

For a finite signed measure ν\nu on (X,F)(X,\mathcal{F}) and a Hahn set PP for ν\nu, ν+\nu^{+} and ν−\nu^{-} are the finite measures of Hahn and Jordan Decompositions of a Finite Signed Measure (ii),

ν+(A)=ν(A∩P),ν−(A)=−ν(A∖P)(A∈F),\nu^{+}(A)=\nu(A\cap P),\qquad\nu^{-}(A)=-\nu(A\setminus P)\qquad(A\in\mathcal{F}),

the Jordan decomposition of ν\nu. Background: Hahn and Jordan Decompositions of a Finite Signed Measure and Finite Signed Measures from Finite Measures and from Integrals.

Dependent choice. The axiom of dependent choice is a standing hypothesis of the items that adopt this setting, in place of the contrary remark of Measurable Functions and the Lebesgue Integral: Standing Notation (vii).

Use. The background facts carried by (iii), and their elementary consequences, are used without further citation.
