The Dual Norm

The dual norm of a bounded linear functional on a real normed space is the infimum of its nonnegative bounds.

Statement

In the setting of Separable Real Normed Spaces and Hahn–Banach: Notation, let XX be a real normed space, let F∈X∗F\in X^{*} be an element of the dual space, and let BFB_{F} be the set of nonnegative bounds of FF, which has an infimum by The Nonnegative Bounds of a Bounded Linear Functional Have an Infimum, Which Is a Bound (i).

Dual norm. The dual norm of FF is

∥F∥∗=inf⁡BF.\lVert F\rVert_{*}=\inf B_{F}.
