The Class Comprehension Theorem for Predicative Formulas

For every predicative formula there is a class whose elements, among the tuples of sets, are exactly the tuples satisfying the formula; for a single variable this class is unique. This is a theorem scheme, one theorem for each formula.

Statement

This is a theorem scheme of the metatheory: it asserts one theorem for each formula as below.

Let n≥1n\ge1 and m≥0m\ge0 be metatheoretic numbers, let x1,…,xnx_{1},\dots,x_{n} be distinct set variables and Y1,…,YmY_{1},\dots,Y_{m} distinct variables of either kind, different from x1,…,xnx_{1},\dots,x_{n} (the parameters), and let φ(x1,…,xn,Y1,…,Ym)\varphi(x_{1},\dots,x_{n},Y_{1},\dots,Y_{m}) be a predicative formula whose free variables are among them. Then for all classes Y1,…,YmY_{1},\dots,Y_{m}, with a set assigned to each parameter that is a set variable as in the reading of formulas, there is a class ZZ such that, for all sets x1,…,xnx_{1},\dots,x_{n}, the tuple satisfies

⟨x1,…,xn⟩∈Zif and only ifφ(x1,…,xn,Y1,…,Ym).\langle x_{1},\dots,x_{n}\rangle\in Z\quad\text{if and only if}\quad \varphi(x_{1},\dots,x_{n},Y_{1},\dots,Y_{m}).

When n=1n=1, the class ZZ above is unique: any two classes ZZ and Z′Z' such that, for every set x1x_{1}, each of x1∈Zx_{1}\in Z and x1∈Z′x_{1}\in Z' holds if and only if φ(x1,Y1,…,Ym)\varphi(x_{1},Y_{1},\dots,Y_{m}), are equal.
