The Distance on the Complex Numbers

Defines the distance on the complex numbers as the modulus of the difference.

Statement

In the setting of The Complex Numbers, with the Real Numbers Identified with a Subset of the Complex Numbers, for z∈Cz\in\mathbb{C} write ∣z∣|z| for the modulus of zz, a real number; for real zz this is the absolute value of zz by The Modulus of a Complex Number §agreement. Thus ∣z−w∣∈R|z-w|\in\mathbb{R} for all z,w∈Cz,w\in\mathbb{C}, so the map below exists and is unique by Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation §maps.

The distance on C\mathbb{C} is the map dC:C×C→Rd_{\mathbb{C}}:\mathbb{C}\times\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{R} with

dC(z,w)=∣z−w∣for all z,w∈C.d_{\mathbb{C}}(z,w)=|z-w|\qquad\text{for all }z,w\in\mathbb{C}.
