The Ordered Pair of Two Sets and Nested Tuples

The Kuratowski ordered pair of two sets x and y is the set {{x},{x,y}}; nested tuples of n sets are built by pairing the tuple of the first n-1 entries with the last.

Statement

For sets xx and yy, the ordered pair of xx and yy is the set

(x,y)={{x},{x,y}},(x,y)=\bigl\{\{x\},\{x,y\}\bigr\},

the unordered pair of the singleton {x}\{x\} and the unordered pair {x,y}\{x,y\}. Its first component is xx and its second component is yy.

The ordered pair is a defined set symbol.

This clause is a notation scheme of the metatheory, one notation for each number of entries. For a metatheoretic number n≥1n\ge1 and sets x1,…,xnx_{1},\dots,x_{n}, the tuple ⟨x1,…,xn⟩\langle x_{1},\dots,x_{n}\rangle is defined by recursion on nn:

⟨x1⟩=x1,⟨x1,…,xn,xn+1⟩=(⟨x1,…,xn⟩,xn+1).\langle x_{1}\rangle=x_{1},\qquad \langle x_{1},\dots,x_{n},x_{n+1}\rangle=\bigl(\langle x_{1},\dots,x_{n}\rangle,x_{n+1}\bigr).

Thus ⟨x,y⟩=(x,y)\langle x,y\rangle=(x,y) and ⟨u,v,w⟩=((u,v),w)\langle u,v,w\rangle=((u,v),w); each tuple is a set, being either x1x_{1} or an ordered pair, and a tuple stands for the nested ordered-pair expression it abbreviates, so that its occurrences are eliminated as those of ordered pairs.
