Unitary Laws Are the Laws of Unitary Tuples, and Are Realised Together with a Free Semicircular Family

Traces of words in unitaries of a tracial W*-probability space form a unitary law, and every unitary law is realised this way together with a semicircular family obeying the free second-moment relations.

Statement

In the setting of Complex Hilbert Spaces and Bounded Linear Maps: Standing Notation, let N\mathbb{N} be the set of natural numbers, let d∈Nd\in\mathbb{N}, let W2dW_{2d} and the generators g(l)g(l) and signs ε(l)\varepsilon(l) of letters l∈[2d]l\in[2d] be as in Words in Unitary Letters: Generators, Signs, Inverse Letters, Lengths and Adjoint Words, and let Ld\mathcal{L}_{d} be the set of unitary laws of dd-tuples.

For every tracial W*-probability space (H,M,Ω)(H,M,\Omega), with trace τM\tau_{M}, and every dd-tuple V=(V1,…,Vd)V=(V_{1},\dots,V_{d}) of unitary operators on HH belonging to MM, the following notation is used. For a letter l∈[2d]l\in[2d] put V(l)=Vg(l)V^{(l)}=V_{g(l)} if ε(l)=1\varepsilon(l)=1 and V(l)=Vg(l)∗V^{(l)}=V_{g(l)}^{*} if ε(l)=−1\varepsilon(l)=-1; put V(∅)=IV^{(\varnothing)}=I and, for a word ww of length k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N}, V(w)=V(w1)V(w2)⋯V(wk)V^{(w)}=V^{(w_{1})}V^{(w_{2})}\cdots V^{(w_{k})}. These operators belong to MM, which contains II and is closed under products and adjoints by Cyclic Tracial Operator Algebras and Their Traces §star-algebra. We write AV\mathcal{A}_{V} for the set of finite linear combinations, with complex coefficients, of the operators V(w)V^{(w)}, w∈W2dw\in W_{2d}; thus AV⊆M\mathcal{A}_{V}\subseteq M, since MM is closed under sums, complex scalar multiples, products and adjoints by Cyclic Tracial Operator Algebras and Their Traces §star-algebra. Finally, λV:W2d→C\lambda_{V}:W_{2d}\to\mathbb{C} is the map given by λV(w)=τM(V(w))\lambda_{V}(w)=\tau_{M}\bigl(V^{(w)}\bigr).

Then the following hold.

1. (Laws of unitary tuples) For every tracial W*-probability space (H,M,Ω)(H,M,\Omega) and every dd-tuple VV of unitary operators on HH belonging to MM, λV∈Ld\lambda_{V}\in\mathcal{L}_{d}.

2. (Realisation together with a semicircular family) For every λ∈Ld\lambda\in\mathcal{L}_{d} there are a tracial W*-probability space (H,M,Ω)(H,M,\Omega) with trace τM\tau_{M}, a dd-tuple U=(U1,…,Ud)U=(U_{1},\dots,U_{d}) of unitary operators on HH belonging to MM with λU=λ\lambda_{U}=\lambda, and self-adjoint operators S1,…,Sd∈MS_{1},\dots,S_{d}\in M with ∥Sj∥op≤2\lVert S_{j}\rVert_{\mathrm{op}}\le2 for every j∈[d]j\in[d], such that the following two properties hold, where δil=1\delta_{il}=1 if i=li=l and δil=0\delta_{il}=0 if i≠li\neq l.

(a) (Centred) τM(SiZ)=0\tau_{M}(S_{i}Z)=0 for every i∈[d]i\in[d] and every Z∈AUZ\in\mathcal{A}_{U}.

(b) (Covariance) τM(Si Z Sl Z′)=δil τM(Z) τM(Z′)\tau_{M}(S_{i}\,Z\,S_{l}\,Z')=\delta_{il}\,\tau_{M}(Z)\,\tau_{M}(Z') for all i,l∈[d]i,l\in[d] and all Z,Z′∈AUZ,Z'\in\mathcal{A}_{U}.
