The Image of a Natural Number in a Commutative Ring

The image of a natural number n in a commutative ring is the sum of n copies of the unit, and the image of 0 is 0.

Statement

In the setting of The Natural Numbers and the Natural Numbers with Zero: Arithmetic, Order, Induction and Recursion, let RR, with ++, ⋅\cdot, 00 and 11, be a commutative ring, and let n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, with [n][n] as in Intervals of Natural Numbers §segment.

The image of nn in RR is nR=∑k=1n1n_{R}=\sum_{k=1}^{n}1, the finite sum of the constant map k↦1k\mapsto1 on [n][n], if n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}; and nR=0n_{R}=0 if n=0n=0.
