ℝⁿ Is a Real Hilbert Space

Euclidean space with its componentwise operations and the dot product is a real inner product space whose induced norm is the Euclidean norm and whose norm metric is the Euclidean distance; it is a real Hilbert space.

Statement

In the setting of Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation, let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}.

Inner product space. Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}, with its componentwise sum x+yx+y and scalar multiple txtx, is a real vector space, whose zero vector, negatives and differences are the origin 00, −x-x and x−yx-y of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}. The dot product is an inner product on it, so Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} with the dot product is a real inner product space.

Norm and distance. The induced norm of this real inner product space is the Euclidean norm ∥⋅∥\lVert\cdot\rVert, and its norm metric, as a real normed space (The Norm of a Real Inner Product Space (iii)), is the Euclidean distance dEd_{E}.

Hilbert space. Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} with the dot product is a real Hilbert space.
