Kit for def:continuous-map-metric-spaces

Continuity of a map between metric spaces, at a point or on a subset, relative to a subset or on the whole space, is a predicative condition, and the maps continuous in each of these senses form a class.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts, Continued: Typed Arithmetic, Maps and Predicativity, let n≥1n\ge1 be a metatheoretic number, let x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} be distinct set variables, and let i,j,k,l,m,p,q<ni,j,k,l,m,p,q<n, not necessarily distinct. A condition on x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} is predicative if it is expressed by a predicative formula, with x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} in place of the set variables listed in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i) and no displayed variables; R\mathbb{R}, the addition ++, the element 00 and the order ≤\le of R\mathbb{R} are parameters. Metric spaces are as in Metric Space (vi), subsets as in Subclasses and Subsets (i), maps, and continuity at a point and on a subset as in Continuous Map Between Metric Spaces (i) and Continuous Map Between Metric Spaces (ii). In the first four clauses X=xiX=x_{i}, dX=xjd_{X}=x_{j}, Y=xkY=x_{k}, dY=xld_{Y}=x_{l}, A=xmA=x_{m}, f=xpf=x_{p} and x=xqx=x_{q}, where these letters occur.

Continuity at a point. The condition "(X,dX)(X,d_{X}) and (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}) are metric spaces, A⊆XA\subseteq X, ff is a map f:A→Yf:A\to Y, x∈Ax\in A, and ff is continuous at xx relative to AA" on x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} is predicative.

Continuity at a point of the space. The condition "(X,dX)(X,d_{X}) and (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}) are metric spaces, ff is a map f:X→Yf:X\to Y, x∈Xx\in X, and ff is continuous at xx" on x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} is predicative.

Continuity on a subset. The condition "(X,dX)(X,d_{X}) and (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}) are metric spaces, A⊆XA\subseteq X, ff is a map f:A→Yf:A\to Y, and ff is continuous on AA" on x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} is predicative.

Continuous maps. The condition "(X,dX)(X,d_{X}) and (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}) are metric spaces, ff is a map f:X→Yf:X\to Y, and ff is continuous" on x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} is predicative.

The class of maps continuous at a point. For all metric spaces (X,dX)(X,d_{X}) and (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}), every A⊆XA\subseteq X and every x∈Ax\in A there is a class CC such that, for every class ff, f∈Cf\in C if and only if ff is a map f:A→Yf:A\to Y that is continuous at xx relative to AA.

The class of maps of the space continuous at a point. For all metric spaces (X,dX)(X,d_{X}) and (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}) and every x∈Xx\in X there is a class CC such that, for every class ff, f∈Cf\in C if and only if ff is a map f:X→Yf:X\to Y that is continuous at xx.

The class of maps continuous on a subset. For all metric spaces (X,dX)(X,d_{X}) and (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}) and every A⊆XA\subseteq X there is a class CC such that, for every class ff, f∈Cf\in C if and only if ff is a map f:A→Yf:A\to Y that is continuous on AA.

The class of continuous maps. For all metric spaces (X,dX)(X,d_{X}) and (Y,dY)(Y,d_{Y}) there is a class CC such that, for every class ff, f∈Cf\in C if and only if ff is a continuous map f:X→Yf:X\to Y.
