Properties of the Minkowski Gauge

The gauge of an open convex set U containing 0 is a sublinear functional, lies between 0 and ‖x‖/r when the ball of radius r about 0 lies in U, and U is exactly the set where the gauge is less than 1.

Statement

In the setting of Separable Real Normed Spaces and Hahn–Banach: Notation, let XX be a real normed space with zero vector 0X0_{X}, let U⊆XU\subseteq X be open and convex with 0X∈U0_{X}\in U, and let pUp_{U} be its gauge.

Sublinearity. pUp_{U} is a sublinear functional on XX.

Bounds. If r>0r>0 is a real number with B(0X,r)⊆UB(0_{X},r)\subseteq U, then

0≤pU(x)≤r−1∥x∥for every x∈X.0\le p_{U}(x)\le r^{-1}\lVert x\rVert\qquad\text{for every }x\in X.

The set as a sublevel set.

U={x∈X:pU(x)<1}.U=\{x\in X:p_{U}(x)<1\}.
