σ-Algebras Generated by Random Elements

The σ-algebra generated by a random element, or by a family of random elements, is the σ-algebra generated by the preimages of Borel sets.

Statement

In the setting of Probability Spaces: Notation, let (S,d)(S,d) be a metric space, let JJ be a set and let ((Sj,dj))j∈J((S_{j},d_{j}))_{j\in J} be a family of metric spaces.

The σ\sigma-algebra σ(X)\sigma(X). For a random element XX of SS, the σ\sigma-algebra generated by XX is

σ(X)=σ({X−1(B):B∈B(S)})\sigma(X)=\sigma\bigl(\{X^{-1}(B):B\in\mathcal{B}(S)\}\bigr)

(Preimages under a Map: Membership, the Preimage Map, Sequences of Preimages, and the Set of Sets with Preimage in a Given Set (iii)), a σ\sigma-algebra on Ω\Omega contained in F\mathcal{F} (The σ-Algebra Generated by Measurable Functions into Metric Spaces (i)).

The σ\sigma-algebra σ(Xj:j∈J)\sigma(X_{j}:j\in J). For a family (Xj)j∈J(X_{j})_{j\in J} in which each XjX_{j} is a random element of SjS_{j}, the σ\sigma-algebra generated by (Xj)j∈J(X_{j})_{j\in J} is

σ(Xj:j∈J)=σ(⋃j∈J{Xj−1(B):B∈B(Sj)}),\sigma(X_{j}:j\in J)=\sigma\Bigl(\bigcup_{j\in J}\{X_{j}^{-1}(B):B\in\mathcal{B}(S_{j})\}\Bigr),

a σ\sigma-algebra on Ω\Omega contained in F\mathcal{F} (The σ-Algebra Generated by Measurable Functions into Metric Spaces (ii)).
