The Minkowski Gauge of an Open Convex Neighbourhood of the Origin

The gauge of an open convex set U containing 0 in a real normed space assigns to x the infimum of the t > 0 with x/t in U.

Statement

In the setting of Separable Real Normed Spaces and Hahn–Banach: Notation, let XX be a real normed space with zero vector 0X0_{X}, and let U⊆XU\subseteq X be open and convex with 0X∈U0_{X}\in U.

Gauge. The gauge of UU is the function pU:X→Rp_{U}:X\to\mathbb{R} given by

pU(x)=inf⁡{t∈R:t>0 and t−1x∈U},p_{U}(x)=\inf\{t\in\mathbb{R}:t>0\text{ and }t^{-1}x\in U\},
