The Free Entropy: the Semicircular Upper Bound, Semicircular Values, Smoothing, the de Bruijn Identity and Upper Semicontinuity

The free entropy is at most that of the semicircular law with the same second moment, equals (d/2)log(2 pi e s) on the semicircular law of variance s, is finite after any positive time of free heat flow, increases along the flow by half the integrated free Fisher information, and is weak-star upper semicontinuous on bounded laws.

Statement

In the setting of Free Products, Semicircular Laws, the Free Heat Flow, Free Fisher Information and Free Entropy: Standing Notation, let λ∈Σd\lambda\in\Sigma_{d} and let s>0s>0 be real.

1. (Semicircular upper bound) If λ∈Dχ\lambda\in\mathcal{D}_{\chi}, then M(λ)>0M(\lambda)>0 and

χ∗(λ)≤d2log⁡(2πe M(λ)d).\chi^{*}(\lambda)\le\frac{d}{2}\log\Bigl(\frac{2\pi e\,M(\lambda)}{d}\Bigr).

2. (Semicircular laws) scd,s∈Dχ\mathrm{sc}_{d,s}\in\mathcal{D}_{\chi} and χ∗(scd,s)=d2log⁡(2πe s)\chi^{*}(\mathrm{sc}_{d,s})=\frac{d}{2}\log(2\pi e\,s).

3. (Smoothing) λ⊞scd,s∈Dχ\lambda\boxplus\mathrm{sc}_{d,s}\in\mathcal{D}_{\chi}.

4. (de Bruijn identity) If λ∈Dχ\lambda\in\mathcal{D}_{\chi}, then fλf_{\lambda} is integrable on (0,s)(0,s) and

χ∗(λ⊞scd,s)=χ∗(λ)+12∫(0,s)fλ(t) dt.\chi^{*}(\lambda\boxplus\mathrm{sc}_{d,s})=\chi^{*}(\lambda)+\frac{1}{2}\int_{(0,s)}f_{\lambda}(t)\,dt.

5. (Upper semicontinuity) Let R>0R>0 and cc be real, and let (λk)k∈N(\lambda_{k})_{k\in\mathbb{N}} be a sequence in Dχ∩Σd,R\mathcal{D}_{\chi}\cap\Sigma_{d,R} with χ∗(λk)≥c\chi^{*}(\lambda_{k})\ge c for every kk that converges weak-star to λ\lambda. Then λ∈Dχ\lambda\in\mathcal{D}_{\chi} and χ∗(λ)≥c\chi^{*}(\lambda)\ge c.
