Sums, Multiples and Products of Functions into [0,∞]

For functions f and g from a set into [0,∞] and c in [0,∞], defines the pointwise sum f+g, multiple cf and product fg, formed with the sum and product of [0,∞]; in particular the product f1Af1_A with an indicator function.

Statement

In the setting of Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation, let XX be a set, let f,g:X→[0,∞]f,g:X\to[0,\infty] be functions and let c∈[0,∞]c\in[0,\infty]. Sums and products in [0,∞][0,\infty] are those of Addition and Multiplication on [0,∞] (i) and Addition and Multiplication on [0,∞] (ii) (the three functions below exist by Maps and Relations Given by Formulas (i)).

Sum. The sum of ff and gg is the function f+g:X→[0,∞]f+g:X\to[0,\infty] with

(f+g)(x)=f(x)+g(x)(x∈X).(f+g)(x)=f(x)+g(x)\qquad(x\in X).

Multiple. The multiple of ff by cc is the function cf:X→[0,∞]cf:X\to[0,\infty] with

(cf)(x)=c f(x)(x∈X).(cf)(x)=c\,f(x)\qquad(x\in X).

Product. The product of ff and gg is the function fg:X→[0,∞]fg:X\to[0,\infty] with

(fg)(x)=f(x) g(x)(x∈X).(fg)(x)=f(x)\,g(x)\qquad(x\in X).

Products with an indicator. For A⊆XA\subseteq X, the indicator function 1A\mathbf{1}_{A} takes only the values 00 and 11, which lie in [0,∞][0,\infty] (The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (ii)), so it is also a function into [0,∞][0,\infty]; f1Af\mathbf{1}_{A} is the product of ff and 1A\mathbf{1}_{A} as in (iii):

(f1A)(x)=f(x) 1A(x)(x∈X).(f\mathbf{1}_{A})(x)=f(x)\,\mathbf{1}_{A}(x)\qquad(x\in X).
