The Rank–Nullity Theorem

For a linear map T on a finite-dimensional vector space V, the image of T is finite-dimensional and dim V is the sum of the dimensions of the kernel and the image.

Statement

In the setting of Linear Algebra: Standing Notation, let KK be a field, let VV be a finite-dimensional vector space over KK, let WW be a vector space over KK, and let TT be a linear map from VV to WW.

Rank–nullity. The image im⁡T\operatorname{im}T is finite-dimensional, the kernel ker⁡T\ker T is finite-dimensional (Properties of Dimension (v)), and

dim⁡V=dim⁡ker⁡T+dim⁡im⁡T.\dim V=\dim\ker T+\dim\operatorname{im}T.
