Statement

Let mm and nn be natural numbers, let AA be a real m×nm\times n matrix, with entry notation and index sets [m][m] and [n][n] as there, and let λR\lambda\in\mathbb{R}, where R\mathbb{R} is the set of real numbers with the multiplication of its ordered field structure.

The scalar multiple λA\lambda A is the real m×nm\times n matrix whose entries are

(λA)ij=λAij(\lambda A)_{ij}=\lambda\,A_{ij}

for all i[m]i\in[m] and j[n]j\in[n].
