Toolkit for AL1

Routine facts for the group theory of phase AL1: inclusion and emptiness of classes, restrictions of binary operations to closed subsets, natural powers as iterated products of constant maps, predicativity of conditions on powers in a monoid, and the existence of two classes given by comprehension.

Statement

In the setting of Groups: Standing Notation: for classes DD and FF, F∣DF|_{D} is the restriction of FF to DD. For a binary operation ⋅\cdot on a set XX, n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N} and a map aa from a set containing [n][n] to XX, ∏k=1na(k)\prod_{k=1}^{n}a(k) is as in Iterated Operations: Finite Sums and Finite Products (ii), and ∏k=1nt\prod_{k=1}^{n}t for an expression tt in kk as in Iterated Operations: Finite Sums and Finite Products (i); for x∈Xx\in X and n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, xnx^{n} is the power of Powers with Exponents in the Natural Numbers with Zero (i) and, when ⋅\cdot has a neutral element, of Powers with Exponents in the Natural Numbers with Zero (ii). Z\mathbb{Z} is the set of integers, with the sum ++ and the product ⋅\cdot of The Integers (iii). In the four clauses on predicative conditions, a condition on a set variable x0x_{0} is expressed by a predicative formula as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i) with k=1k=1, x1=x0x_{1}=x_{0} and no displayed variables, its parameters being MM, the operation of MM, the elements of MM and of N0\mathbb{N}_{0} named in the clause, N0\mathbb{N}_{0}, the multiplication of N0\mathbb{N}_{0}, and the map p:M×N0→Mp:M\times\mathbb{N}_{0}\to M, p(x,m)=xmp(x,m)=x^{m}, of Powers with a Variable Base: a Predicative Formula and the Map (x, m) ↦ x^m (ii).

Reflexivity of inclusion. Every set AA is a subset of itself: A⊆AA\subseteq A.

A class with an element is not empty. If gg is an element of a class HH, then H≠∅H\neq\emptyset.

Disjoint classes. If XX and YY are disjoint classes, then X∩Y=∅X\cap Y=\emptyset.

Restricted operations. Let ∗\ast be a binary operation on a set MM, and let S⊆MS\subseteq M be a class with u∗v∈Su\ast v\in S for all u,v∈Su,v\in S. Then ∗∣S×S\ast|_{S\times S} is a binary operation on SS.

Values of a restricted operation. Let ∗\ast be a binary operation on a set MM, let S⊆MS\subseteq M be a class, and let u,v∈Su,v\in S. Then

(∗∣S×S)((u,v))=u∗v.(\ast|_{S\times S})((u,v))=u\ast v .

Associativity passes to a restriction. Let ∗\ast be an associative binary operation on a set MM, and let S⊆MS\subseteq M be a class with u∗v∈Su\ast v\in S for all u,v∈Su,v\in S. Then ∗∣S×S\ast|_{S\times S} is an associative binary operation on SS.

Neutral elements pass to a restriction. Let ∗\ast be a binary operation on a set MM with a neutral element ee, and let S⊆MS\subseteq M be a class with e∈Se\in S and u∗v∈Su\ast v\in S for all u,v∈Su,v\in S. Then ∗∣S×S\ast|_{S\times S} is a binary operation on SS with neutral element ee.

Positive powers. Let ⋅\cdot be a binary operation on a set XX, let x∈Xx\in X and let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}. Then

xn=∏k=1nx.x^{n}=\prod_{k=1}^{n}x .

Positive powers as products of a constant list. Let ⋅\cdot be a binary operation on a set XX, let x∈Xx\in X and let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}. Then xnx^{n} is the iterated operation of the constant map [n]×{x}:[n]→X[n]\times\{x\}:[n]\to X:

xn=∏k=1n([n]×{x})(k).x^{n}=\prod_{k=1}^{n}\bigl([n]\times\{x\}\bigr)(k).

The zeroth power. Let ⋅\cdot be a binary operation on a set XX with a neutral element ee, and let x∈Xx\in X. Then x0=ex^{0}=e.

Restriction to a shorter segment. Let ⋅\cdot be a binary operation on a set XX, let x∈Xx\in X and let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}. Then

∏k=1n([n+1]×{x})(k)=∏k=1n([n]×{x})(k).\prod_{k=1}^{n}\bigl([n+1]\times\{x\}\bigr)(k)=\prod_{k=1}^{n}\bigl([n]\times\{x\}\bigr)(k).

Shifted segments. Let ⋅\cdot be a binary operation on a set XX, let x∈Xx\in X and let n,m∈Nn,m\in\mathbb{N}. Then ([m]×{x})(j)=([n+m]×{x})(n+j)([m]\times\{x\})(j)=([n+m]\times\{x\})(n+j) for every j∈[m]j\in[m], and

∏k=1n([n+m]×{x})(k)=∏k=1n([n]×{x})(k).\prod_{k=1}^{n}\bigl([n+m]\times\{x\}\bigr)(k)=\prod_{k=1}^{n}\bigl([n]\times\{x\}\bigr)(k).

Powers lie in the monoid. Let (M,⋅)(M,\cdot) be a monoid, let x∈Mx\in M and let n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}. Then xn∈Mx^{n}\in M.

The condition wx0=uax0w^{x_{0}}=u^{a x_{0}} is predicative. Let (M,⋅)(M,\cdot) be a monoid, let u,w∈Mu,w\in M and let a∈N0a\in\mathbb{N}_{0}. Then the condition "if x0∈N0x_{0}\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, then wx0=uax0w^{x_{0}}=u^{a x_{0}}" on x0x_{0} is expressed by a predicative formula.

The condition ux0=cu^{x_{0}}=c is predicative. Let (M,⋅)(M,\cdot) be a monoid and let u,c∈Mu,c\in M. Then the condition "if x0∈N0x_{0}\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, then ux0=cu^{x_{0}}=c" on x0x_{0} is expressed by a predicative formula.

The condition ux0v=vux0u^{x_{0}}v=vu^{x_{0}} is predicative. Let (M,⋅)(M,\cdot) be a monoid and let u,v∈Mu,v\in M. Then the condition "if x0∈N0x_{0}\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, then ux0v=vux0u^{x_{0}}v=vu^{x_{0}}" on x0x_{0} is expressed by a predicative formula.

The condition wx0=ux0vx0w^{x_{0}}=u^{x_{0}}v^{x_{0}} is predicative. Let (M,⋅)(M,\cdot) be a monoid and let u,v,w∈Mu,v,w\in M. Then the condition "if x0∈N0x_{0}\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, then wx0=ux0vx0w^{x_{0}}=u^{x_{0}}v^{x_{0}}" on x0x_{0} is expressed by a predicative formula.

The class of remainders. Let f:N0→Zf:\mathbb{N}_{0}\to\mathbb{Z} be a map, let c∈Zc\in\mathbb{Z} and let mm be a class. Then there is a class SS such that, for every set rr,

r∈S  ⟺  r∈N0 and m=q⋅c+f(r) for some q∈Z.r\in S\iff r\in\mathbb{N}_{0}\ \text{and}\ m=q\cdot c+f(r)\ \text{for some}\ q\in\mathbb{Z}.

The relation of lying in a common left coset. Let GG be a group and let H≤GH\le G. Then there is a class RR such that, for every set pp,

p∈R  ⟺  p=(g,k) for some g,k∈G with g−1k∈H.p\in R\iff p=(g,k)\ \text{for some}\ g,k\in G\ \text{with}\ g^{-1}k\in H.
