Linear Algebra: Standing Notation

Fixes the notation for fields, vector spaces, finite sums, subspaces, linear maps and their operations, kernels, images, spans and dimension, each by reference to the item that introduces it.

Statement

Base. This setting extends Routine Facts, Continued: Typed Arithmetic, Maps and Predicativity: its conventions and notation are in force.

Fields and vector spaces. A field KK is written with its operations and constants ++, ⋅\cdot, 00 and 11, and a vector space VV over KK with its addition ++ and its scalar multiplication (λ,v)↦λv(\lambda,v)\mapsto\lambda v. In VV, the zero vector is written 0V0_{V}, or 00 where no confusion with the zero of KK can arise; the negative of vv is written −v-v, and the difference of uu and vv is written u−vu-v. For n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and vectors x1,…,xn∈Vx_{1},\dots,x_{n}\in V, the sum ∑i=1nxi\sum_{i=1}^{n}x_{i} is as in Span of a Finite Family; Spanning Families (i).

Subspaces. A subspace of VV is a linear subspace of VV.

Linear maps. For vector spaces VV and WW over KK, a linear map TT from VV to WW and v∈Vv\in V, the value T(v)T(v) is also written TvTv. The sets L(V,W)\mathcal{L}(V,W) and L(V)\mathcal{L}(V) are as in Operations on Linear Maps (i); sums S+TS+T, scalar multiples λT\lambda T, composites STST and the identity IVI_{V} are as in Operations on Linear Maps (ii), Operations on Linear Maps (iii), Operations on Linear Maps (iv) and Operations on Linear Maps (v); and ker⁡T\ker T and im⁡T\operatorname{im}T are as in Kernel and Image of a Linear Map (i) and Kernel and Image of a Linear Map (ii).

Span and dimension. For n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and v1,…,vn∈Vv_{1},\dots,v_{n}\in V, span⁡(v1,…,vn)\operatorname{span}(v_{1},\dots,v_{n}) is as in Span of a Finite Family; Spanning Families (ii); for a finite-dimensional vector space VV, dim⁡V\dim V is as in Finite-Dimensional Vector Spaces and Their Dimension (ii).
