The Conjugate Variables of a Free Entropy Penalty are Displacement Monotone along Optimal Couplings

Adding the tangent inequalities of a free entropy penalty at the two ends of an optimal coupling shows that the conjugate variables are displacement monotone (decreasing) along it.

Statement

In the setting of Noncommutative Laws, Couplings and the Wasserstein Distance: Standing Notation, let (D0,E0)(\mathcal{D}_{0},\mathcal{E}_{0}) be a free entropy penalty; the conjugate variables of a law λ\lambda that has them are written ξλ\xi_{\lambda}, and the coupling pairings Jγ1\mathcal{J}^{1}_{\gamma} and Jγ2\mathcal{J}^{2}_{\gamma} are those of Marginal Isometries, Bounded Plans and Displacement Pairings for Noncommutative Laws §coupling-pairing.

If μ,ν∈D0\mu,\nu\in\mathcal{D}_{0} both have conjugate variables and γ∈Π(μ,ν)\gamma\in\Pi(\mu,\nu) is an optimal coupling, then

Jγ1(ξμ)−Jγ2(ξν)≤0.\mathcal{J}^{1}_{\gamma}(\xi_{\mu})-\mathcal{J}^{2}_{\gamma}(\xi_{\nu})\le0.
