Real Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors of a Real Square Matrix

A nonzero point x of RnR^n is an eigenvector of a square real matrix A with eigenvalue lambda if Ax = lambda x; a real number lambda is an eigenvalue of A if A has an eigenvector with eigenvalue lambda.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}, let A∈Mn(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) be a square real matrix and let λ∈R\lambda\in\mathbb{R}, with the matrix-vector product AxAx, the scalar multiple λx\lambda x and the origin 00 of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}.

A point x∈Rnx\in\mathbb{R}^{n} is an eigenvector of AA with eigenvalue λ\lambda if x≠0x\neq0 and Ax=λxAx=\lambda x.

λ\lambda is an eigenvalue of AA if AA has an eigenvector with eigenvalue λ\lambda.
