The Arctangent Function

The arctangent is the inverse of the tangent, a function from the real line onto (-π/2, π/2).

Statement

In the setting of The Real Line: Standing Notation and Background for Calculus on Intervals, let tan⁡:(−π/2,π/2)→R\tan:(-\pi/2,\pi/2)\to\mathbb{R} be the tangent function, with π\pi as there.

The arctangent. The arctangent is the inverse

arctan⁡:R→(−π/2,π/2)\arctan:\mathbb{R}\to(-\pi/2,\pi/2)

of the bijection tan⁡\tan of The Tangent: Derivative, Monotonicity, Bijectivity onto R\mathbb{R} and Special Values (iii): for y∈Ry\in\mathbb{R}, arctan⁡y\arctan y is the unique x∈(−π/2,π/2)x\in(-\pi/2,\pi/2) with tan⁡x=y\tan x=y.
