Rearranging Sums, Differences and Two-Term Combinations in a Real Vector Space

Exchanging middle terms of a double sum, translation invariance and splitting of differences, cancellation, and the rules for two-term linear combinations in a real vector space.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts, Continued: Typed Arithmetic, Maps and Predicativity and Real Normed, Inner Product and Hilbert Spaces: Notation, let VV, with its addition and scalar multiplication, be a real vector space.

Exchanging the middle terms. If a,b,c,d∈Va,b,c,d\in V, then

(a+b)+(c+d)=(a+c)+(b+d).(a+b)+(c+d)=(a+c)+(b+d).

Translation invariance of differences. If x,y,b∈Vx,y,b\in V, then (x+b)−(y+b)=x−y(x+b)-(y+b)=x-y.

Difference of two sums. If x,y,a,b∈Vx,y,a,b\in V, then

(x+y)−(a+b)=(x−a)+(y−b).(x+y)-(a+b)=(x-a)+(y-b).

Cancelling an added vector. If a,w∈Va,w\in V, then (a+w)−a=w(a+w)-a=w.

Combinations of sums. If t,s∈Rt,s\in\mathbb{R} and p,q,p′,q′∈Vp,q,p',q'\in V, then

t(p+q)+s(p′+q′)=(tp+sp′)+(tq+sq′).t(p+q)+s(p'+q')=(tp+sp')+(tq+sq').

Combinations with weights summing to one. If t,s∈Rt,s\in\mathbb{R} with t+s=1t+s=1 and x∈Vx\in V, then tx+sx=xtx+sx=x.
