The Matrix Product, Matrix-Vector Product, Transpose, Trace, Identity Matrix and Standard Basis Vectors Exist and Are Unique

The maps giving the matrix product, the matrix-vector product, the transpose and the trace exist and are unique, as do the identity matrix and the standard basis vectors of RnR^n.

Statement

In the setting of Metric Spaces: Balls, the Metric Topology, and the Real and Complex Numbers as Metric Spaces, let m,n,p∈Nm,n,p\in\mathbb{N}, with real matrices and their entries, points of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} and their components as in Euclidean Space Rn\mathbb{R}^n: n-Tuples of Real Numbers with Their Componentwise Operations §membership, and sums as in Commutative Rings, Fields and Ordered Fields: Standard Notation §rings.

There is exactly one map π:Mm×n(R)×Mn×p(R)→Mm×p(R)\pi:\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R})\times\mathcal{M}_{n\times p}(\mathbb{R})\to\mathcal{M}_{m\times p}(\mathbb{R}) such that π(A,B)ik=∑j=1nAijBjk\pi(A,B)_{ik}=\sum_{j=1}^{n}A_{ij}B_{jk} for all A∈Mm×n(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}), B∈Mn×p(R)B\in\mathcal{M}_{n\times p}(\mathbb{R}), i∈[m]i\in[m] and k∈[p]k\in[p].

There is exactly one map ϕ:Mm×n(R)×Rn→Rm\phi:\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R})\times\mathbb{R}^{n}\to\mathbb{R}^{m} such that ϕ(A,x)i=∑j=1nAijxj\phi(A,x)_{i}=\sum_{j=1}^{n}A_{ij}x_{j} for all A∈Mm×n(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}), x∈Rnx\in\mathbb{R}^{n} and i∈[m]i\in[m].

There is exactly one map τ:Mm×n(R)→Mn×m(R)\tau:\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R})\to\mathcal{M}_{n\times m}(\mathbb{R}) such that τ(A)ji=Aij\tau(A)_{ji}=A_{ij} for all A∈Mm×n(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}), i∈[m]i\in[m] and j∈[n]j\in[n].

There is exactly one map t:Mn(R)→Rt:\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R})\to\mathbb{R} such that t(A)=∑i=1nAiit(A)=\sum_{i=1}^{n}A_{ii} for all A∈Mn(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}).

There is exactly one E∈Mn(R)E\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) such that, for all i,j∈[n]i,j\in[n], Eij=1E_{ij}=1 if i=ji=j and Eij=0E_{ij}=0 if i≠ji\neq j.

For every k∈[n]k\in[n] there is exactly one e∈Rne\in\mathbb{R}^{n} such that, for all i∈[n]i\in[n], ei=1e_{i}=1 if i=ki=k and ei=0e_{i}=0 if i≠ki\neq k.
