Monotone Sequences

A sequence in a partially ordered set is nondecreasing, strictly increasing, nonincreasing or strictly decreasing when each term compares accordingly with the next, and monotone when it is nondecreasing or nonincreasing.

Statement

In the setting of The Natural Numbers and the Natural Numbers with Zero: Arithmetic, Order, Induction and Recursion, let ≤\le be a partial order on a set XX, with strict relation <<, and let (an)(a_{n}) be a sequence in XX.

(an)(a_{n}) is nondecreasing if an≤an+1a_{n}\le a_{n+1} for every n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}, strictly increasing if an<an+1a_{n}<a_{n+1} for every n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}, nonincreasing if an+1≤ana_{n+1}\le a_{n} for every n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}, strictly decreasing if an+1<ana_{n+1}<a_{n} for every n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}, and monotone if it is nondecreasing or nonincreasing.
