Order Rules for Products, Halves, Minima and Absolute Values in ℝ

The ordered-field rules of lem:ordered-field-inequalities-nbg-2026c (products, halving, strict bounds on absolute values) read in the type Real, together with a positive number below two positives and the reciprocal, in the form the Lean formalization uses.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let aa, bb, cc and dd be real numbers, read as elements of the type Real\mathrm{Real} of The Real Numbers as a Type (i), with 00, 11, ++, ⋅\cdot, ≤\le and << those of Real\mathrm{Real} (The Real Numbers as a Type (ii)). Reciprocals c−1c^{-1} and quotients a/ca/c are those of Negatives, Differences, Reciprocals and Quotients (ii), and absolute values ∣a∣|a| those of Absolute Value in an Ordered Field (i), taken in R\mathbb{R} and read in Real\mathrm{Real} as in Differences, Quotients and Absolute Values of Real Numbers, and Their Order in the Extended Real Line, Read in the Type Real (ii) and Differences, Quotients and Absolute Values of Real Numbers, and Their Order in the Extended Real Line, Read in the Type Real (iii), where, for qq in Real\mathrm{Real} and a set ss, q=sq=s means that the set of qq is ss, as in Differences, Quotients and Absolute Values of Real Numbers, and Their Order in the Extended Real Line, Read in the Type Real; 2=1+12=1+1.

Multiplying on the right. If a≤ba\le b and 0≤c0\le c, then a⋅c≤b⋅ca\cdot c\le b\cdot c.

Multiplying on the left. If a≤ba\le b and 0≤c0\le c, then c⋅a≤c⋅bc\cdot a\le c\cdot b.

Nonnegative products. If 0≤a0\le a and 0≤b0\le b, then 0≤a⋅b0\le a\cdot b.

Positive products. If 0<a0<a and 0<b0<b, then 0<a⋅b0<a\cdot b.

Multiplying inequalities. If 0≤a≤b0\le a\le b and 0≤c≤d0\le c\le d, then a⋅c≤b⋅da\cdot c\le b\cdot d.

Cancelling a positive factor. If a⋅c≤b⋅ca\cdot c\le b\cdot c and 0<c0<c, then a≤ba\le b.

Reciprocals. If c≠0c\neq0, there is yy in Real\mathrm{Real} with

c⋅y=1,y=c−1=1/c,c\cdot y=1,\qquad y=c^{-1}=1/c,

and if moreover 0<c0<c, then 0<y0<y.

Halves. There is qq in Real\mathrm{Real} with a=q+qa=q+q, namely q=a/2q=a/2.

A positive number below two positive numbers. If 0<a0<a and 0<b0<b, there is c′c' in Real\mathrm{Real} with 0<c′0<c', c′≤ac'\le a and c′≤bc'\le b, namely c′=ac'=a if a≤ba\le b and c′=bc'=b otherwise.

Strict bounds on an absolute value.

∣a∣<c  ⟺  −c<a and a<c.|a|<c\iff -c<a\ \text{and}\ a<c .

Vanishing absolute value. ∣a∣=0|a|=0 if and only if a=0a=0.

A number lies between ±\pm its absolute value. −∣a∣≤a≤∣a∣-|a|\le a\le|a|.
