Predicative Formulas for the Vocabulary of Finite Combinatorics, at Any Variable Positions

Conditions such as finiteness, number of elements, segments, intervals, tuples, maps and bijections from a segment, iterated operations, powers, binomial and multinomial coefficients, images and complements are predicative at any variable positions.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let n≥1n\ge1 be a metatheoretic number, let x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} be distinct set variables, and let i,j,k<ni,j,k<n, not necessarily distinct. Each clause states that one or two conditions on x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} are predicative: expressed by a predicative formula, with x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} in place of the variables x1,…,xNx_{1},\dots,x_{N} of Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i) and no displayed variables. For sets mm and m′m' we write

[m]={l∈N0:1≤l≤m},{m,…,m′}={l∈N0:m≤l≤m′},[m]=\{l\in\mathbb{N}_{0}:1\le l\le m\},\qquad\{m,\dots,m'\}=\{l\in\mathbb{N}_{0}:m\le l\le m'\},

with ≤\le the order of N0\mathbb{N}_{0}, and, for a class XX, XmX^{m} for the class of maps u:[m]→Xu:[m]\to X.

Finiteness and number of elements. "xix_{i} is finite", and "xjx_{j} is finite and xi=#xjx_{i}=\#x_{j}", with #\# the number of elements (the first condition restates Induction over Finite Sets, and Predicative Formulas for the Segments [n] and for Finiteness (ii) at an arbitrary position).

Segments and intervals. "xi=[xj]x_{i}=[x_{j}]", and "xi={xj,…,xk}x_{i}=\{x_{j},\dots,x_{k}\}" (for xj∈N0x_{j}\in\mathbb{N}_{0} the first condition restates Induction over Finite Sets, and Predicative Formulas for the Segments [n] and for Finiteness (i) at arbitrary positions).

Tuples. For a class XX: "xi=Xxjx_{i}=X^{x_{j}}".

Maps from a segment. "xix_{i} is a map xi:[xj]→xkx_{i}:[x_{j}]\to x_{k}", and, for a class BB, "xix_{i} is a map xi:[xj]→Bx_{i}:[x_{j}]\to B".

Bijections from a segment. "xix_{i} is a bijection from [xj][x_{j}] onto xkx_{k}" (for xj∈N0x_{j}\in\mathbb{N}_{0} this restates Predicative Formulas for Bijections from a Segment [n] and for Increasing Listings (i) at arbitrary positions).

Iterated operations. For a binary operation ∗\ast on a set XX: "xj∈Nx_{j}\in\mathbb{N}, xkx_{k} is a map xk:[xj]→Xx_{k}:[x_{j}]\to X, and xix_{i} is the iterated operation ∗l=1xj(xk)l\mathop{\ast}\limits_{l=1}^{x_{j}}(x_{k})_{l}". If moreover ∗\ast is associative and commutative with a neutral element, then for a map a:N0→Xa:\mathbb{N}_{0}\to X: "xj,xk∈N0x_{j},x_{k}\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and xix_{i} is the iterated operation over the interval ∗l=xjxkal\mathop{\ast}\limits_{l=x_{j}}^{x_{k}}a_{l}".

Operations over a finite set. Let ∗\ast be an associative and commutative binary operation on a set XX with a neutral element. For a map f:D→Xf:D\to X on a set DD: "xjx_{j} is a finite subset of DD and xix_{i} is the iterated operation ∗y∈xjf(y)\mathop{\ast}\limits_{y\in x_{j}}f(y)"; and "xjx_{j} is finite, xkx_{k} is a map xk:xj→Xx_{k}:x_{j}\to X, and xi=∗y∈xjxk(y)x_{i}=\mathop{\ast}\limits_{y\in x_{j}}x_{k}(y)".

Powers. For a commutative ring RR: "xj∈Rx_{j}\in R, xk∈N0x_{k}\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and xi=xjxkx_{i}=x_{j}^{x_{k}}", the power for the multiplication of RR (this restates Powers with a Variable Base: a Predicative Formula and the Map (x, m) ↦ x^m (i) for that multiplication, at arbitrary positions).

Binomial coefficients. "xj,xk∈N0x_{j},x_{k}\in\mathbb{N}_{0} and xix_{i} is the binomial coefficient (xjxk)\binom{x_{j}}{x_{k}}".

Multinomial coefficients. "xj∈Nx_{j}\in\mathbb{N}, xk∈N0xjx_{k}\in\mathbb{N}_{0}^{x_{j}} and xix_{i} is the multinomial coefficient of the tuple xkx_{k}".

Images. For a class ff: "xi=f[xj]x_{i}=f[x_{j}]", the image of xjx_{j} under ff.

Complements. For a class AA: "xi=A∖xjx_{i}=A\setminus x_{j}", the difference.
