Countability as a Predicative Condition, and Finite Powers of a Set as a Typed Term

The condition that a set is countable is given by a predicative formula, also when applied to a typed term; and for a set S, the set of maps from [n] to S is a typed term in a variable n with values in the natural numbers.

Statement

This helper adopts the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices; it is a statement of the metatheory about formulas and expressions, predicative being meant for formulas written with abbreviations. Let k≥0k\ge0, the distinct set variables x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, the parameters with their fixed values, and assignments be as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i); let γ\gamma be a guard; and let terms under γ\gamma and their values, terms of type AA under γ\gamma for a class AA, and conditions expressed by a predicative formula be as in Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (i), Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (ii) and Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (ii). Countable sets are as in Countable Set (i). For a set SS and n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, S[n]S^{[n]} is the set of maps [n]→S[n]\to S of Tuples in a Set: the Set of n-Tuples and Their Components (i), with [n][n] as in Intervals of Natural Numbers (ii). Let NN and RR be class variables, parameters with the values N\mathbb{N} and the order ≤\le of N0\mathbb{N}_{0}.

Let xx, aa and ff be distinct set variables, let μ(f,N,x)\mu(f,N,x) and σ(f,x)\sigma(f,x) be the formulas of Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (vii) and Predicativity under Renaming of Set Variables by Variables, of Formulas with Ordered Pairs, and of Formulas for Relations, Functions, Maps, Injectivity, Surjectivity and Bijectivity (ix) with ff, NN and xx for their FF, AA and BB, their bound variables chosen other than xx, aa and ff, and let cnt(x)\mathrm{cnt}(x) be the formula

∀a (a∉x)∨∃f (μ(f,N,x)∧σ(f,x)).\forall a\,(a\notin x)\vee\exists f\,\bigl(\mu(f,N,x)\wedge\sigma(f,x)\bigr).

It is predicative, its free variables are xx and NN, and for every set cc, cnt(x)\mathrm{cnt}(x) holds when cc is assigned to xx if and only if cc is countable. Consequently, for every class AA and every term tt of type AA under γ\gamma, the condition γ∧\gamma\wedge "the set tt is countable" on x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} is expressed by a predicative formula.

Let SS be a parameter whose value is a set, also written SS, and let nn be one of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} such that n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0} under every assignment satisfying γ\gamma. Let S[n]S^{[n]} be the term under γ\gamma, written with nn and the parameters SS, NN and RR, whose value under each assignment satisfying γ\gamma is S[n]S^{[n]} for the set assigned to nn. Then S[n]S^{[n]} is a term of type P(P(N0×S))\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{N}_{0}\times S)) under γ\gamma, with the power set P\mathcal{P} and the Cartesian product ×\times. For instance, k=1k=1, n=x1n=x_{1} and γ\gamma the formula n∈Nn\in N qualify, as N⊆N0\mathbb{N}\subseteq\mathbb{N}_{0}.
