Bounded Linear Functionals and the Dual Space of a Real Normed Space

A bound for a linear functional F on a real normed space is a real C with |F(x)| ≤ C‖x‖ for all x; the dual space is the set of linear functionals that have a bound.

Statement

In the setting of Separable Real Normed Spaces and Hahn–Banach: Notation, let XX be a real normed space and let FF be a linear functional on XX.

Bound. A real number CC is a bound for FF if

∣F(x)∣≤C ∥x∥for every x∈X.|F(x)|\le C\,\lVert x\rVert\qquad\text{for every }x\in X.

Set of bounds. The set BFB_{F} of nonnegative bounds of FF is

BF={M∈R:M≥0 and M is a bound for F}.B_{F}=\{M\in\mathbb{R}:M\ge0\text{ and }M\text{ is a bound for }F\}.

Bounded functional. FF is bounded if it has a bound.

Dual space. The dual space X∗X^{*} of XX is the set of bounded linear functionals on XX.
