Preimages, Unions and Intersections over an Index Set, Suprema and Infima, and Superlevel Sets as Typed Terms

Preimages of a set under a map, unions and intersections of a family of sets over a fixed index set, suprema and infima in the extended real line, and the sets where an extended-real-valued map lies above or below a level are typed terms when their arguments are, so equating a set with them is expressed by a predicative formula and maps given by them exist.

Statement

This helper adopts the setting of Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation; it is a statement of the metatheory about expressions. Let k≥0k\ge0, the distinct set variables x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, the parameters with their fixed values, and assignments be as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i); let γ\gamma be a guard; and let terms under γ\gamma and their values, terms of type AA under γ\gamma for a class AA, and conditions expressed by a predicative formula be as in Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (i), Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard (ii) and Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (ii). For sets AA and BB, BAB^{A} is the set of maps A→BA\to B and P(A)\mathcal{P}(A) the power set of AA, as in Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation (v) and The Union Set and the Power Set of a Set (ii). A variable, or a parameter, whose sets lie in a class AA is a term of type AA by Typed Terms under a Predicative Guard: Variables, Parameters, Values of Maps and Ordered Pairs, and Predicative Equations and Memberships between Them (i) and Typed Terms under a Predicative Guard: Variables, Parameters, Values of Maps and Ordered Pairs, and Predicative Equations and Memberships between Them (ii), so the terms below may be such variables. For a parameter FF whose value is a map F:A×B→CF:A\times B\to C and terms ss and tt, F(s,t)F(s,t) stands for the term F((s,t))F((s,t)) of Typed Terms under a Predicative Guard: Variables, Parameters, Values of Maps and Ordered Pairs, and Predicative Equations and Memberships between Them (iii) and Typed Terms under a Predicative Guard: Variables, Parameters, Values of Maps and Ordered Pairs, and Predicative Equations and Memberships between Them (iv), written with FF, ss and tt.

Let SS and TT be sets. There is exactly one map preS,T:TS×P(T)→P(S)\mathrm{pre}_{S,T}:T^{S}\times\mathcal{P}(T)\to\mathcal{P}(S) with preS,T(f,V)=f−1(V)\mathrm{pre}_{S,T}(f,V)=f^{-1}(V), the preimage of Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation (vii), for all f∈TSf\in T^{S} and V∈P(T)V\in\mathcal{P}(T); here f−1(V)f^{-1}(V) is the defined set symbol of Preimages under a Map: Membership, the Preimage Map, Sequences of Preimages, and the Set of Sets with Preimage in a Given Set (i). Let uu be a term of type TST^{S} under γ\gamma and BB a term of type P(T)\mathcal{P}(T) under γ\gamma, and let u−1(B)u^{-1}(B) stand for the term preS,T(u,B)\mathrm{pre}_{S,T}(u,B), written with a parameter whose value is preS,T\mathrm{pre}_{S,T}; its value under each assignment satisfying γ\gamma is f−1(V)f^{-1}(V) for the values ff of uu and VV of BB. Then u−1(B)u^{-1}(B) is a term of type P(S)\mathcal{P}(S) under γ\gamma.

Let XX and ZZ be sets, let II be a term of type P(Z)\mathcal{P}(Z) under γ\gamma, and let ii be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in II. Let γ′\gamma' be a guard for the variables x1,…,xk,ix_{1},\dots,x_{k},i that expresses the condition γ∧i∈I\gamma\wedge i\in I on x1,…,xk,ix_{1},\dots,x_{k},i; such a guard exists. Let tt be a term of type P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) under γ′\gamma'. Under an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} satisfying γ\gamma, write II also for the value of II, and for a∈Ia\in I let t(a)t(a) be the value of tt when aa is assigned to ii and x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} keep their sets. For the intersection, suppose moreover that the value of II is nonempty under every assignment satisfying γ\gamma. Then there is a term ⋃i∈It\bigcup_{i\in I}t under γ\gamma and, under that supposition, a term ⋂i∈It\bigcap_{i\in I}t under γ\gamma, each written with II, ii and tt, ii bound in it, whose values under each assignment satisfying γ\gamma are the class of the sets lying in t(a)t(a) for some a∈Ia\in I, respectively the class of the sets lying in t(a)t(a) for every a∈Ia\in I. For every family (Aa)a∈I(A_{a})_{a\in I} with Aa=t(a)A_{a}=t(a) for every a∈Ia\in I, these values are its union and intersection. Each of ⋃i∈It\bigcup_{i\in I}t and ⋂i∈It\bigcap_{i\in I}t is a term of type P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) under γ\gamma.

Let XX be a set. There is exactly one map ∪X:P(X)×P(X)→P(X)\cup_{X}:\mathcal{P}(X)\times\mathcal{P}(X)\to\mathcal{P}(X) with ∪X(v,w)=v∪w\cup_{X}(v,w)=v\cup w for all v,w∈P(X)v,w\in\mathcal{P}(X), and likewise exactly one map ∩X\cap_{X}, respectively ∖X\setminus_{X}, with the value v∩wv\cap w, respectively v∖wv\setminus w, with the union, intersection and difference. Let AA and BB be terms of type P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) under γ\gamma, and let A∪BA\cup B, A∩BA\cap B and A∖BA\setminus B stand for the terms ∪X(A,B)\cup_{X}(A,B), ∩X(A,B)\cap_{X}(A,B) and ∖X(A,B)\setminus_{X}(A,B), each written with a parameter whose value is the map named; their values under each assignment satisfying γ\gamma are the union, intersection and difference of the values of AA and BB. Then A∪BA\cup B, A∩BA\cap B and A∖BA\setminus B are terms of type P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) under γ\gamma.

There is exactly one map Sup:P([−∞,∞])→[−∞,∞]\mathrm{Sup}:\mathcal{P}([-\infty,\infty])\to[-\infty,\infty] with Sup(e)=sup⁡e\mathrm{Sup}(e)=\sup e, and exactly one map Inf:P([−∞,∞])→[−∞,∞]\mathrm{Inf}:\mathcal{P}([-\infty,\infty])\to[-\infty,\infty] with Inf(e)=inf⁡e\mathrm{Inf}(e)=\inf e, for every e∈P([−∞,∞])e\in\mathcal{P}([-\infty,\infty]), with the supremum and the infimum in [−∞,∞][-\infty,\infty] of Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation (ii). Let EE be a term of type P([−∞,∞])\mathcal{P}([-\infty,\infty]) under γ\gamma, and let sup⁡E\sup E and inf⁡E\inf E stand for the terms Sup(E)\mathrm{Sup}(E) and Inf(E)\mathrm{Inf}(E) of Typed Terms under a Predicative Guard: Variables, Parameters, Values of Maps and Ordered Pairs, and Predicative Equations and Memberships between Them (iii), written with a parameter whose value is Sup\mathrm{Sup}, respectively Inf\mathrm{Inf}. Then sup⁡E\sup E and inf⁡E\inf E are terms of type [−∞,∞][-\infty,\infty] under γ\gamma. In particular, EE may be the image {t:i∈D}\{t:i\in D\} of Images of Typed Terms: the Set of Values {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} Is a Set, Finite when DD Is Finite, and a Typed Term (iv), for a set variable ii, a parameter DD and a term tt of type BB under the guard γ∧i∈D\gamma\wedge i\in D as in that helper, with B⊆[−∞,∞]B\subseteq[-\infty,\infty]: by that clause it is a term of type P([−∞,∞])\mathcal{P}([-\infty,\infty]) under γ\gamma, and by Images of Typed Terms: the Set of Values {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} Is a Set, Finite when DD Is Finite, and a Typed Term (i) its value is the set of the values of tt at the elements of DD.

Let XX be a set and let CC and C′C' be subsets of [−∞,∞][-\infty,\infty], with ≤\le, <<, ≥\ge and >> the order of The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (iii) and the relations derived from it there. There is exactly one map Λ>:CX×C′→P(X)\Lambda_{>}:C^{X}\times C'\to\mathcal{P}(X) with Λ>(f,c)={x∈X:f(x)>c}\Lambda_{>}(f,c)=\{x\in X:f(x)>c\} for all f∈CXf\in C^{X} and c∈C′c\in C', and likewise exactly one map Λ≥\Lambda_{\ge}, Λ<\Lambda_{<}, respectively Λ≤\Lambda_{\le}, with the value {x∈X:f(x)≥c}\{x\in X:f(x)\ge c\}, {x∈X:f(x)<c}\{x\in X:f(x)<c\}, respectively {x∈X:f(x)≤c}\{x\in X:f(x)\le c\}. Let uu be a term of type CXC^{X} under γ\gamma and aa a term of type C′C' under γ\gamma, and let {u>a}\{u>a\}, {u≥a}\{u\ge a\}, {u<a}\{u<a\} and {u≤a}\{u\le a\} stand for the terms Λ>(u,a)\Lambda_{>}(u,a), Λ≥(u,a)\Lambda_{\ge}(u,a), Λ<(u,a)\Lambda_{<}(u,a) and Λ≤(u,a)\Lambda_{\le}(u,a), each written with a parameter whose value is the map named. Then each of these four terms is a term of type P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) under γ\gamma. In particular, CC and C′C' may be [0,∞][0,\infty], R\mathbb{R} or Q\mathbb{Q}, a rational number being identified with a real number as in The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness (v); for p,q∈Rp,q\in\mathbb{R}, p≤qp\le q and p<qp<q hold if and only if they hold in R\mathbb{R}, by Order and Suprema in the Extended Real Line (i).

Let DD and CC be class variables, parameters whose values are sets, also written DD and CC, and let ii be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and is not free in γ\gamma. Let tt be a term of type CC under the guard γ∧i∈D\gamma\wedge i\in D for the variables x1,…,xk,ix_{1},\dots,x_{k},i, and, under an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} satisfying γ\gamma and for a∈Da\in D, let t(a)t(a) be the value of tt when aa is assigned to ii and x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} keep their sets. Then under each assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} satisfying γ\gamma there is exactly one map h:D→Ch:D\to C with h(a)=t(a)h(a)=t(a) for every a∈Da\in D. Let (i↦t)(i\mapsto t) be the term under γ\gamma, written with ii, DD, CC and tt, ii bound in it, whose value under each assignment satisfying γ\gamma is that map hh. Then (i↦t)(i\mapsto t) is a term of type CDC^{D} under γ\gamma.
