Epigraph of a Real-Valued Function on a Subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^n

The epigraph of a function f on a subset C of RnR^n is the set of points (x, mu) of Rn+1R^{n+1} with x in C and mu at least f(x).

Statement

In the setting of Convex Functions on Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Standing Notation, let C⊆RnC\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n} and let f:C→Rf:C\to\mathbb{R} be a function.

Epigraph. The epigraph of ff is the subset of Rn+1\mathbb{R}^{n+1}

epi⁡f={(x,μ): x∈C, μ∈R, μ≥f(x)}.\operatorname{epi}f=\bigl\{(x,\mu):\ x\in C,\ \mu\in\mathbb{R},\ \mu\ge f(x)\bigr\}.
