The Tangent: Derivative, Monotonicity, Bijectivity onto R\mathbb{R} and Special Values

The tangent on (-π/2, π/2) is differentiable with derivative 1 + tan² = 1/cos², hence continuous and strictly increasing; it maps (-π/2, π/2) bijectively onto the real line, with tan 0 = 0 and tan(π/4) = 1.

Statement

In the setting of The Real Line: Standing Notation and Background for Calculus on Intervals, let tan⁡:(−π/2,π/2)→R\tan:(-\pi/2,\pi/2)\to\mathbb{R} be the tangent function, with sin⁡\sin, cos⁡\cos and π\pi as there.

Derivative. tan⁡\tan is differentiable, and its derivative tan⁡′\tan' satisfies, for every x∈(−π/2,π/2)x\in(-\pi/2,\pi/2),

tan⁡′(x)=1+tan⁡2x=1cos⁡2x.\tan'(x)=1+\tan^{2}x=\frac{1}{\cos^{2}x}.

Monotonicity and continuity. tan⁡\tan is strictly increasing, that is, tan⁡x<tan⁡y\tan x<\tan y for all x,y∈(−π/2,π/2)x,y\in(-\pi/2,\pi/2) with x<yx<y, and tan⁡\tan is continuous on (−π/2,π/2)(-\pi/2,\pi/2).

Bijectivity. tan⁡:(−π/2,π/2)→R\tan:(-\pi/2,\pi/2)\to\mathbb{R} is bijective.

Special values.

tan⁡0=0,tan⁡π4=1.\tan 0=0,\qquad \tan\frac{\pi}{4}=1 .
