The Rank of a Real Matrix

The rank of a real m x n matrix A is the dimension of the image of the linear map x -> Ax from RnR^n to RmR^m.

Statement

In the setting of Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation (Algebra) and Linear Algebra: Standing Notation, let m,n∈Nm,n\in\mathbb{N}, let A∈Mm×n(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}) be a real matrix.

Rank. The rank of AA is the dimension of the image of LAL_{A},

rank⁡A=dim⁡im⁡LA\operatorname{rank}A=\dim\operatorname{im}L_{A}
