Subsets of a Metric Space: the Restricted Metric, Sequences, Limits in Closed Subsets and Completeness of Closed Subsets

The restriction of a metric to a subset is a metric, and a sequence in the subset converges to a point of it, or is Cauchy, in the subset exactly when it does so in the whole space. A limit of a sequence in a closed subset lies in the subset, so a closed subset of a complete metric space is complete.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let (X,d)(X,d) be a metric space, with open balls Bd(x,r)B_{d}(x,r) and the topology Td\mathcal{T}_{d} of Metric Spaces: Balls, the Metric Topology, and the Real and Complex Numbers as Metric Spaces §topology. Let A⊆XA\subseteq X, and let dA=d∣A×Ad_{A}=d|_{A\times A} be the restriction of dd to A×AA\times A; it is a map dA:A×A→Rd_{A}:A\times A\to\mathbb{R} with dA(a,b)=d(a,b)d_{A}(a,b)=d(a,b) for all a,b∈Aa,b\in A, by Domains and Restrictions of Maps §restriction-map and Domains and Restrictions of Maps §restriction-value. Sequences are as in Sequences §sequence; convergence to a point, convergent sequences, Cauchy sequences and completeness are as in Convergent Sequence in a Metric Space §converges, Convergent Sequence in a Metric Space §convergent, Cauchy Sequence in a Metric Space §cauchy and Complete Metric Space §complete, and closed subsets as in Closed Subset of a Topological Space §closed.

dAd_{A} is a metric on AA, so that (A,dA)(A,d_{A}) is a metric space.

Let (ak)(a_{k}) be a sequence in AA; it is also a sequence in XX. For every a∈Aa\in A, (ak)(a_{k}) converges to aa in (A,dA)(A,d_{A}) if and only if it converges to aa in (X,d)(X,d). Moreover, (ak)(a_{k}) is a Cauchy sequence in (A,dA)(A,d_{A}) if and only if it is a Cauchy sequence in (X,d)(X,d).

If AA is closed in (X,Td)(X,\mathcal{T}_{d}), (ak)(a_{k}) is a sequence in AA, x∈Xx\in X, and (ak)(a_{k}) converges to xx in (X,d)(X,d), then x∈Ax\in A.

If (X,d)(X,d) is complete and AA is closed in (X,Td)(X,\mathcal{T}_{d}), then (A,dA)(A,d_{A}) is complete.
