A Dominated Linear Functional on a Line

On the line spanned by a nonzero vector x₀ of a real normed space, the functional t x₀ ↦ t c is linear and dominated by a sublinear functional p whenever -p(-x₀) ≤ c ≤ p(x₀).

Statement

In the setting of Separable Real Normed Spaces and Hahn–Banach: Notation, let XX be a real vector space with zero vector 0X0_{X}, let pp be a sublinear functional on XX, let x0∈Xx_{0}\in X with x0≠0Xx_{0}\neq0_{X}, and let cc be a real number with

−p(−x0)≤c≤p(x0).-p(-x_{0})\le c\le p(x_{0}).

Let Rx0={t x0:t∈R}\mathbb{R}x_{0}=\{t\,x_{0}:t\in\mathbb{R}\}.

The line. Rx0\mathbb{R}x_{0} is a linear subspace of XX, and if t,t′∈Rt,t'\in\mathbb{R} satisfy t x0=t′ x0t\,x_{0}=t'\,x_{0}, then t=t′t=t'.

The functional. The function g:Rx0→Rg:\mathbb{R}x_{0}\to\mathbb{R} given by

g(t x0)=t c(t∈R)g(t\,x_{0})=t\,c\qquad(t\in\mathbb{R})

is well defined by (i), it is a linear functional on Rx0\mathbb{R}x_{0}, and g(y)≤p(y)g(y)\le p(y) for every y∈Rx0y\in\mathbb{R}x_{0}.
