Linear Subspaces Are Vector Spaces; Intersections

A linear subspace with the restricted operations is a vector space with the same zero, intersections of nonempty families of subspaces are subspaces, and the zero subspace and the whole space are subspaces.

Statement

In the setting of Linear Algebra: Standing Notation, let KK be a field, and let VV be a vector space over KK.

Subspaces are vector spaces. Every linear subspace WW of VV, with the restrictions of the addition of VV to W×WW\times W and of the scalar multiplication of VV to K×WK\times W, is a vector space over KK, and its zero vector is 00.

Intersections. For every nonempty set II and every family (Wi)i∈I(W_{i})_{i\in I} of linear subspaces of VV, the intersection ⋂i∈IWi\bigcap_{i\in I}W_{i} is a linear subspace of VV.

The trivial subspaces. {0}\{0\} and VV are linear subspaces of VV.

Families in a subspace. Let WW be a linear subspace of VV, with the vector space structure of (i), let n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, and let (w1,…,wn)(w_{1},\dots,w_{n}) be an nn-tuple in WW. For every (λ1,…,λn)∈Kn(\lambda_{1},\dots,\lambda_{n})\in K^{n} the sum ∑i=1nλiwi\sum_{i=1}^{n}\lambda_{i}w_{i} computed in WW equals the one computed in VV. Consequently the span of (w1,…,wn)(w_{1},\dots,w_{n}) in WW equals its span in VV, and (w1,…,wn)(w_{1},\dots,w_{n}) is linearly independent in WW if and only if it is linearly independent in VV.
