Positive Part, Negative Part and Absolute Value of a Real-Valued Function

For a real-valued function f on a set, defines its positive part f⁺ = max{f, 0}, its negative part f⁻ = max{−f, 0} and its absolute value |f|, all pointwise; each is also a function into [0,∞].

Statement

In the setting of Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation, let XX be a set and f:X→Rf:X\to\mathbb{R} a function. For y∈Ry\in\mathbb{R}, max⁡{y,0}\max\{y,0\} is the greatest element of {y,0}\{y,0\} (it exists by The Maximum and Minimum of Two Elements of a Total Order (i)), and ∣y∣|y| is the absolute value of yy. A function into R\mathbb{R} with values ≥0\ge0 is also a function into [0,∞][0,\infty], which contains every real number ≥0\ge0 (The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (ii)).

Positive part. The positive part of ff is the function f+:X→Rf^{+}:X\to\mathbb{R} with

f+(x)=max⁡{f(x),0}(x∈X)f^{+}(x)=\max\{f(x),0\}\qquad(x\in X)

For every x∈Xx\in X, f+(x)≥0f^{+}(x)\ge0, so f+(x)∈[0,∞]f^{+}(x)\in[0,\infty] and f+f^{+} is also a function into [0,∞][0,\infty] (The Maximum and Minimum of Two Elements of a Total Order (iii)).

Negative part. The negative part of ff is the function f−:X→Rf^{-}:X\to\mathbb{R} with

f−(x)=max⁡{−f(x),0}(x∈X)f^{-}(x)=\max\{-f(x),0\}\qquad(x\in X)

For every x∈Xx\in X, f−(x)≥0f^{-}(x)\ge0, so f−(x)∈[0,∞]f^{-}(x)\in[0,\infty] and f−f^{-} is also a function into [0,∞][0,\infty] (The Maximum and Minimum of Two Elements of a Total Order (iii)).

Absolute value. The absolute value of ff is the function ∣f∣:X→R|f|:X\to\mathbb{R} with

∣f∣(x)=∣f(x)∣(x∈X)|f|(x)=|f(x)|\qquad(x\in X)

(∣f∣|f| is also a function into [0,∞][0,\infty], by Arithmetic and Order Rules in the Real Numbers, Stated for ℝ (ix)).
