Perturbations of an Invertible Matrix: the Invertible Matrices Form an Open Set and Inversion Is Continuous

A square matrix B closer to an invertible matrix A than 1/||A^{-1}|| in operator-norm distance is invertible, with an explicit bound on the distance between the inverses. Hence the invertible matrices form an open set and inversion is continuous.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}, with the square real matrices Mn(R)\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}), invertible matrices CC and their inverses C−1C^{-1}, the operator norm ∥C∥\lVert C\rVert of a matrix CC, and the distance dnd_{n}, a metric on Mn(R)\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) by The Real Matrices with the Operator-Norm Distance Form a Complete Metric Space with Entrywise Convergence §metric. Let GLn(R)={C∈Mn(R):C is invertible}\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R})=\{C\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}):C\text{ is invertible}\} be the set of the invertible matrices in Mn(R)\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) of The Invertible Matrices and the Positive Semidefinite Matrices Form Sets §invertible.

Let A∈Mn(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) be invertible. If B∈Mn(R)B\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) and ∥A−1∥ dn(A,B)<1\lVert A^{-1}\rVert\,d_{n}(A,B)<1, then BB is invertible and

dn(A−1,B−1)≤∥A−1∥2 dn(A,B)1−∥A−1∥ dn(A,B).d_{n}(A^{-1},B^{-1})\le\frac{\lVert A^{-1}\rVert^{2}\,d_{n}(A,B)}{1-\lVert A^{-1}\rVert\,d_{n}(A,B)} .

GLn(R)\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) is open in (Mn(R),dn)(\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}),d_{n}).

Let A∈Mn(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) be invertible. For every real ε>0\varepsilon>0 there is a real δ>0\delta>0 such that every B∈Mn(R)B\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) with dn(A,B)<δd_{n}(A,B)<\delta is invertible and satisfies dn(A−1,B−1)<εd_{n}(A^{-1},B^{-1})<\varepsilon.

Let dGLd_{\mathrm{GL}} be the restriction of dnd_{n} to GLn(R)×GLn(R)\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R})\times\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R}), a metric on GLn(R)\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) by Subsets of a Metric Space: the Restricted Metric, Sequences, Limits in Closed Subsets and Completeness of Closed Subsets §restriction. There is exactly one map f:GLn(R)→Mn(R)f:\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R})\to\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) with f(B)=B−1f(B)=B^{-1} for every B∈GLn(R)B\in\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R}), the map B↦B−1B\mapsto B^{-1}; and ff, from (GLn(R),dGL)(\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{R}),d_{\mathrm{GL}}) to (Mn(R),dn)(\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}),d_{n}), is continuous.
