Compatible Operations, Maps and Relations Pass to the Quotient

For an equivalence relation on a set, a binary operation, a self-map or a relation that respects the equivalence induces exactly one binary operation, self-map or relation on the quotient acting on classes through representatives.

Statement

In the setting of Class Theory NBG: the Axioms, Standing Conventions and Basic Notation, let aa be a set and RR an equivalence relation on aa; write u R vu\,R\,v for (u,v)∈R(u,v)\in R, [u][u] for the equivalence class of u∈au\in a, and a/Ra/R for the quotient, a set by Equivalence Classes Partition the Set: Cover, Disjointness and Representatives; the Quotient Is a Set and the Canonical Projection Is a Surjection §quotient-set.

Let ∗\ast be a binary operation on aa such that, for all u,u′,v,v′∈au,u',v,v'\in a, if u R u′u\,R\,u' and v R v′v\,R\,v' then (u∗v) R (u′∗v′)(u\ast v)\,R\,(u'\ast v'). Then there is exactly one binary operation ⊛\circledast on a/Ra/R with [u]⊛[v]=[u∗v][u]\circledast[v]=[u\ast v] for all u,v∈au,v\in a.

Let F:a→aF:a\to a be a map such that, for all u,u′∈au,u'\in a, if u R u′u\,R\,u' then F(u) R F(u′)F(u)\,R\,F(u'). Then there is exactly one map Fˉ:a/R→a/R\bar F:a/R\to a/R with Fˉ([u])=[F(u)]\bar F([u])=[F(u)] for all u∈au\in a.

Let TT be a relation on aa such that, for all u,u′,v,v′∈au,u',v,v'\in a, if u R u′u\,R\,u' and v R v′v\,R\,v' then (u,v)∈T(u,v)\in T if and only if (u′,v′)∈T(u',v')\in T. Then there is exactly one relation Tˉ\bar T on a/Ra/R such that, for all u,v∈au,v\in a, ([u],[v])∈Tˉ([u],[v])\in\bar T if and only if (u,v)∈T(u,v)\in T.
