Kit for def:open-subset-metric-space

Being an open subset of a metric space is a predicative condition on the space, its metric and the subset, and the open subsets of a fixed metric space form a class.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts, Continued: Typed Arithmetic, Maps and Predicativity, let n≥1n\ge1 be a metatheoretic number, let x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} be distinct set variables, and let i,j,k<ni,j,k<n, not necessarily distinct. A condition on x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} is predicative if it is expressed by a predicative formula, with x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} in place of the set variables listed in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i) and no displayed variables; R\mathbb{R}, the addition ++, the element 00 and the order ≤\le of R\mathbb{R} are parameters. Metric spaces are as in Metric Space (vi), subsets as in Subclasses and Subsets (i), and open subsets as in Open Subset of a Metric Space (i). In the first clause X=xiX=x_{i}, d=xjd=x_{j} and U=xkU=x_{k}.

Open subsets. The condition "(X,d)(X,d) is a metric space, U⊆XU\subseteq X, and UU is open in (X,d)(X,d)" on x0,…,xn−1x_{0},\dots,x_{n-1} is predicative.

The class of open subsets. For every metric space (X,d)(X,d) there is a class CC such that, for every class UU, U∈CU\in C if and only if U⊆XU\subseteq X and UU is open in (X,d)(X,d).
