The Galerkin Solutions of the Wick-Square Problem Converge to a Classical Solution of the Renormalised Equation, while the Bare Solutions Diverge

With zero running cost, the explicit quadratic Galerkin functions built from the Riccati coefficients solve the Wick-ordered cutoff equations; shifted by the divergent equipartition sum they solve the bare cutoff equations and blow up for dimension at least two; the Wick-ordered ones converge on the Sobolev space of order -1 to a function that differs from the Gaussian penalty by a regular function and solves the renormalised equation classically.

Statement

In the setting of The Wick-Square Problem on the Torus: Standing Notation, take the running cost gg to be the zero function on H−1H^{-1}, and let FNF_{N}, FN0F_{N}^{0}, D\mathcal{D} and FF be the Wick-ordered and bare cutoff operators, and the domain and renormalised operator, for this gg. Let qkq_{k} and aka_{k} be the Riccati coefficients and renormalised constants, ckc_{k} the free-field variances, and PP the Gaussian penalty. For N∈NN\in\mathbb{N} and x∈H−1x\in H^{-1} put

uN(x)=∑k∈ΓN(qk x(k)2+ak),CN=β∑k∈ΓNck,vN(x)=uN(x)+CNγ.u_{N}(x)=\sum_{k\in\Gamma_{N}}\bigl(q_{k}\,x(k)^{2}+a_{k}\bigr),\qquad C_{N}=\beta\sum_{k\in\Gamma_{N}}c_{k},\qquad v_{N}(x)=u_{N}(x)+\frac{C_{N}}{\gamma}.

Then the following hold.

1. (Galerkin solutions) For every N∈NN\in\mathbb{N}, uNu_{N} is twice differentiable along the modes and solves the Wick-ordered cutoff equation: FN[uN](x)=0F_{N}[u_{N}](x)=0 for every x∈H−1x\in H^{-1}.

2. (Bare solutions diverge) For every N∈NN\in\mathbb{N}, vNv_{N} is twice differentiable along the modes and solves the bare cutoff equation: FN0[vN](x)=0F_{N}^{0}[v_{N}](x)=0 for every x∈H−1x\in H^{-1}. If 2≤n2\le n, the sequence (vN(x))N∈N(v_{N}(x))_{N\in\mathbb{N}} is not bounded above, for every x∈H−1x\in H^{-1}.

3. (Renormalised limit) For every x∈H−1x\in H^{-1} the family k↦qk x(k)2+akk\mapsto q_{k}\,x(k)^{2}+a_{k} is cube-summable, and (uN(x))N∈N(u_{N}(x))_{N\in\mathbb{N}} converges to

R(x)=∑k∈Zn(qk x(k)2+ak).R(x)=\sum_{k\in\mathbb{Z}^{n}}\bigl(q_{k}\,x(k)^{2}+a_{k}\bigr).

4. (The limit carries the Gaussian profile) With RR as in clause 3, R−PR-P is regular.

5. (The limit solves the renormalised equation) With RR as in clause 3, RR is twice differentiable along the modes and solves the renormalised equation: for every x∈H−1x\in H^{-1}, (R,x)∈D(R,x)\in\mathcal{D} and F[R](x)=0F[R](x)=0.
