The Hahn–Banach Theorem in a Separable Real Normed Space

In a separable real normed space, a linear functional on a linear subspace that is dominated by a sublinear functional p ≤ C‖·‖ extends to a bounded linear functional on the whole space that is still dominated by p.

Statement

In the setting of Separable Real Normed Spaces and Hahn–Banach: Notation, let XX be a separable real normed space, let pp be a sublinear functional on XX, and let C≥0C\ge0 be a real number with

p(x)≤C ∥x∥for every x∈X.p(x)\le C\,\lVert x\rVert\qquad\text{for every }x\in X.

Let MM be a linear subspace of XX and let ff be a linear functional on MM with f(x)≤p(x)f(x)\le p(x) for every x∈Mx\in M.

Dominated extension. There is an element FF of the dual space X∗X^{*} with

F(x)=f(x)for every x∈M,F(x)≤p(x)for every x∈X.F(x)=f(x)\quad\text{for every }x\in M,\qquad F(x)\le p(x)\quad\text{for every }x\in X.
