The Tangent Space of the Torus Wasserstein Space at a Probability Measure

The tangent space at a probability measure on the torus is the closure, in the square-integrable vector fields against that measure, of the gradients of smooth periodic functions.

Statement

In the setting of Optimal Transport on the Flat Torus: Standing Notation, let μ∈P(Td)\mu\in\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{T}^{d}), let L2(μ;Rd)L^{2}(\mu;\mathbb{R}^{d}) be the space of square-integrable vector fields against μ\mu, and let Cper∞C^{\infty}_{\mathrm{per}} be the smooth periodic functions, whose gradients have classes in L2(μ;Rd)L^{2}(\mu;\mathbb{R}^{d}) by Optimal Transport on the Flat Torus: Standing Notation §calculus.

1. (Gradients of periodic functions) GμG_{\mu} denotes the set of the classes in L2(μ;Rd)L^{2}(\mu;\mathbb{R}^{d}) of the gradients ∇f\nabla f of the functions f∈Cper∞f\in C^{\infty}_{\mathrm{per}}.

2. (Tangent space) The tangent space at μ\mu is the closure Tμ=Gμ‾T_{\mu}=\overline{G_{\mu}} of GμG_{\mu} in L2(μ;Rd)L^{2}(\mu;\mathbb{R}^{d}).
