Riesz Representation Theorem: the Dual of the Continuous Functions with Compact Support Is the Space of Finite Signed Borel Measures

On a locally compact separable metric space, integration against a finite signed Borel measure is a bounded linear functional on the continuous functions with compact support whose dual norm is the total variation norm of the measure; this correspondence is linear, and every bounded linear functional arises from exactly one such measure.

Statement

In the setting of The Dual of C_c(X): Standing Notation, let (X,d)(X,d) be a locally compact metric space that is separable.

The functional of a measure. Let ν∈M(X)\nu\in M(X). The function Φ(ν):Cc(X)→R\Phi(\nu):C_{c}(X)\to\mathbb{R} given by the integral

Φ(ν)(f)=∫Xf dν\Phi(\nu)(f)=\int_{X}f\,d\nu

(every f∈Cc(X)f\in C_{c}(X) being integrable with respect to ν\nu by Properties of the Integral with Respect to a Finite Signed Measure: Linearity, Bounds, Bounded Functions, Linearity in the Measure, Indicators and Finite Measures (iii)) lies in Cc(X)∗C_{c}(X)^{*}, with

∥Φ(ν)∥∗=∥ν∥.\|\Phi(\nu)\|_{*}=\|\nu\|.

Linearity. For ν,ν′∈M(X)\nu,\nu'\in M(X) and c∈Rc\in\mathbb{R}, and the finite signed measures ν+ν′\nu+\nu' and cνc\nu of Properties of the Total Variation: a Finite Measure, the Jordan Decomposition, Linear Combinations, the Total Variation Norm, and Integrability (v),

Φ(ν+ν′)=Φ(ν)+Φ(ν′),Φ(cν)=c Φ(ν).\Phi(\nu+\nu')=\Phi(\nu)+\Phi(\nu'),\qquad\Phi(c\nu)=c\,\Phi(\nu).

Representation. For every Λ∈Cc(X)∗\Lambda\in C_{c}(X)^{*} there is exactly one ν∈M(X)\nu\in M(X) with Λ=Φ(ν)\Lambda=\Phi(\nu), that is,

Λf=∫Xf dν(f∈Cc(X)).\Lambda f=\int_{X}f\,d\nu\qquad(f\in C_{c}(X)).

Isomorphism. Φ\Phi is a linear isometric bijection of the real vector space M(X)M(X) onto the real vector space Cc(X)∗C_{c}(X)^{*}:

∥Φ(ν)−Φ(ν′)∥∗=∥ν−ν′∥(ν,ν′∈M(X)).\|\Phi(\nu)-\Phi(\nu')\|_{*}=\|\nu-\nu'\|\qquad(\nu,\nu'\in M(X)).
