Free Entropy Penalties: Displacement Convexity with Minus the Conjugate Variables as Gradient

A free entropy penalty is a real function on a set of noncommutative laws, bounded below on norm balls, with weak-star closed sublevel sets, satisfying the tangent inequality along optimal couplings with gradient minus the conjugate variables.

Statement

In the setting of Noncommutative Laws, Couplings and the Wasserstein Distance: Standing Notation, the conjugate variables of a law λ\lambda that has them are written ξλ\xi_{\lambda}, the coupling pairing Jγ1\mathcal{J}^{1}_{\gamma} is that of Marginal Isometries, Bounded Plans and Displacement Pairings for Noncommutative Laws §coupling-pairing, and weak-star convergence is that of Weak-Star Convergence of Noncommutative Laws §weak-star.

A free entropy penalty is a pair (D0,E0)(\mathcal{D}_{0},\mathcal{E}_{0}) of a set D0⊆Σd\mathcal{D}_{0}\subseteq\Sigma_{d} and a function E0:D0→R\mathcal{E}_{0}:\mathcal{D}_{0}\to\mathbb{R} with the following three properties.

1. (Lower bound) For every real R>0R>0 there is a real ee with e≤E0(λ)e\le\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda) for every λ∈D0∩Σd,R\lambda\in\mathcal{D}_{0}\cap\Sigma_{d,R}.

2. (Closed sublevel sets) For all reals R>0R>0 and cc, and every sequence (λm)m∈N(\lambda_{m})_{m\in\mathbb{N}} in D0∩Σd,R\mathcal{D}_{0}\cap\Sigma_{d,R} with E0(λm)≤c\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda_{m})\le c for every m∈Nm\in\mathbb{N} that converges weak-star to some λ∈Σd\lambda\in\Sigma_{d}, one has λ∈D0\lambda\in\mathcal{D}_{0} and E0(λ)≤c\mathcal{E}_{0}(\lambda)\le c.

3. (Tangent inequality) For every μ∈D0\mu\in\mathcal{D}_{0} that has conjugate variables, every ν∈D0\nu\in\mathcal{D}_{0} and every optimal coupling γ∈Π(μ,ν)\gamma\in\Pi(\mu,\nu),

E0(ν)≥E0(μ)+Jγ1(ξμ).\mathcal{E}_{0}(\nu)\ge\mathcal{E}_{0}(\mu)+\mathcal{J}^{1}_{\gamma}(\xi_{\mu}).
