Absolute Value and Squaring as Maps on the Reals, and Entrywise Absolute Values and Squares of a Real Matrix

The absolute value and the square are maps from R to R. Composing a real m x n matrix with them gives the real m x n matrices |A| and Ao2A^{o2} of entrywise absolute values and entrywise squares, each unique.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let the absolute value ∣x∣|x| and the square x2=x⋅xx^{2}=x\cdot x of x∈Rx\in\mathbb{R} be as in Absolute Value in an Ordered Field §absolute-value and Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices §arithmetic, and let real matrices and their entries AijA_{ij} be as in Real Matrices: the Set of Real m x n Matrices with Their Entrywise Operations §matrices and Real Matrices: the Set of Real m x n Matrices with Their Entrywise Operations §entries.

There is exactly one map a:R→Ra:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R} with a(x)=∣x∣a(x)=|x| for every x∈Rx\in\mathbb{R}.

There is exactly one map q:R→Rq:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R} with q(x)=x2q(x)=x^{2} for every x∈Rx\in\mathbb{R}.

Let m,n∈Nm,n\in\mathbb{N} and A∈Mm×n(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}). The composites a∘Aa\circ A and q∘Aq\circ A, with aa and qq the maps of the clauses absolute-value and square, are the unique matrices in Mm×n(R)\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}) with entries ∣Aij∣|A_{ij}| and Aij2A_{ij}^{2}, respectively, for all i∈[m]i\in[m] and j∈[n]j\in[n].
