The Reciprocal and the Quotient of Real-Valued Maps with a Nonvanishing Denominator Are Maps

For real-valued maps f and chi on a set E with chi nowhere zero, the maps t to 1/chi(t) and t to f(t)/chi(t) from E to the reals exist and are unique.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let EE be a set and let f,χ:E→Rf,\chi:E\to\mathbb{R} be maps with χ(t)≠0\chi(t)\neq0 for every t∈Et\in E; reciprocals and quotients are as in Negatives, Differences, Reciprocals and Quotients (ii), and 1/y=1⋅y−11/y=1\cdot y^{-1} for y∈Ry\in\mathbb{R} with y≠0y\neq0.

There is exactly one map 1/χ:E→R1/\chi:E\to\mathbb{R} with (1/χ)(t)=1/χ(t)(1/\chi)(t)=1/\chi(t) for every t∈Et\in E.

There is exactly one map f/χ:E→Rf/\chi:E\to\mathbb{R} with (f/χ)(t)=f(t)/χ(t)(f/\chi)(t)=f(t)/\chi(t) for every t∈Et\in E.
