Product Measure

The product μ⊗ν of two σ-finite measures is the unique measure on the product σ-algebra with value μ(A)ν(B) on each measurable rectangle A×B, and the product measure space is the product set with the product σ-algebra and this measure.

Statement

In the setting of Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation, let (X,F,μ)(X,\mathcal{F},\mu) and (Y,G,ν)(Y,\mathcal{G},\nu) be measure spaces with μ\mu and ν\nu σ\sigma-finite, and let F⊗G\mathcal{F}\otimes\mathcal{G} be the product σ\sigma-algebra on X×YX\times Y.

Product measure. The product measure μ⊗ν\mu\otimes\nu is the measure on (X×Y,F⊗G)(X\times Y,\mathcal{F}\otimes\mathcal{G}) with

(μ⊗ν)(A×B)=μ(A) ν(B)for all A∈F and B∈G,(\mu\otimes\nu)(A\times B)=\mu(A)\,\nu(B)\qquad\text{for all }A\in\mathcal{F}\text{ and }B\in\mathcal{G},

which exists and is unique by Existence and Uniqueness of the Product Measure (i). The measure space (X×Y,F⊗G,μ⊗ν)(X\times Y,\mathcal{F}\otimes\mathcal{G},\mu\otimes\nu) is the product measure space.
