Hahn and Jordan Decompositions of a Finite Signed Measure

Under dependent choice a finite signed measure has a Hahn set; for any Hahn set it splits as the difference of two finite measures, which do not depend on the Hahn set and inherit absolute continuity; and two Hahn sets differ only by a set all of whose measurable subsets have measure zero.

Statement

In the setting of Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation, let (X,F)(X,\mathcal{F}) be a measurable space and let ν\nu be a finite signed measure on (X,F)(X,\mathcal{F}).

Hahn decomposition. Assume the axiom of dependent choice. Then ν\nu has a Hahn set.

Jordan decomposition. Let PP be a Hahn set for ν\nu. Then the maps ν+\nu^{+} and ν−\nu^{-} on F\mathcal{F},

ν+(A)=ν(A∩P),ν−(A)=−ν(A∖P),\nu^{+}(A)=\nu(A\cap P),\qquad\nu^{-}(A)=-\nu(A\setminus P),

take values in [0,∞][0,\infty] and are finite measures on (X,F)(X,\mathcal{F}), and

ν(A)=ν+(A)−ν−(A)(A∈F).\nu(A)=\nu^{+}(A)-\nu^{-}(A)\qquad(A\in\mathcal{F}).

They do not depend on the choice of PP. If μ\mu is a measure on (X,F)(X,\mathcal{F}) and ν\nu is absolutely continuous with respect to μ\mu, then ν+\nu^{+} and ν−\nu^{-} are absolutely continuous with respect to μ\mu.

Uniqueness. Let PP and P′P' be Hahn sets for ν\nu. Then ν(A)=0\nu(A)=0 for every A∈FA\in\mathcal{F} with A⊆(P∖P′)∪(P′∖P)A\subseteq(P\setminus P')\cup(P'\setminus P), and

ν(A∩P′)=ν(A∩P),ν(A∖P′)=ν(A∖P)(A∈F).\nu(A\cap P')=\nu(A\cap P),\qquad\nu(A\setminus P')=\nu(A\setminus P)\qquad(A\in\mathcal{F}).
