Images of Typed Terms: the Set of Values {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} Is a Set, Finite when DD Is Finite, and a Typed Term

For a term t of type B under a guard extended by u in D, the class of the values of t at the elements u of the set D is a set contained in B, with the expected elements. It is itself a typed term under the original guard, so equating a set variable with it is expressed by a predicative formula.

Statement

This helper adopts the setting of Sets and Maps: Ordinary Notation; it is a statement of the metatheory about formulas and expressions. Let k≥0k\ge0, the distinct set variables x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, the parameters and assignments be as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards §data, terms under a guard and their values as in Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §term, terms of a type, and conditions expressed by a predicative formula.

Let γ\gamma be a guard, let uu be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and is not free in γ\gamma, and let DD be a variable other than x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} and uu whose value is a set. Let BB be a class and let tt be a term of type BB under the guard γ∧u∈D\gamma\wedge u\in D, for the variables x1,…,xk,ux_{1},\dots,x_{k},u. Under an assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} satisfying γ\gamma and for a∈Da\in D, t(a)t(a) denotes the value of tt when aa is assigned to uu and x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} keep their sets.

Let ss be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, uu and DD, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in tt, and let ψ\psi be a predicative formula expressing the condition γ∧u∈D∧s=t\gamma\wedge u\in D\wedge s=t on x1,…,xk,ux_{1},\dots,x_{k},u and the displayed set variable ss, as Terms and Typed Terms under a Guard §type-expressed provides.

Under each assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} satisfying γ\gamma, the image {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} is the class {s:∃u ψ}\{s:\exists u\,\psi\} of Class Abstraction: the Class of All Sets Satisfying a Predicative Formula §abstraction, in which x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} have the assigned sets as values. For every set bb: b∈{t:u∈D}b\in\{t:u\in D\} if and only if b=t(a)b=t(a) for some a∈Da\in D. In particular, the class {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} does not depend on the choice of ss and ψ\psi.

Under each assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} satisfying γ\gamma, {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} is a set and a subset of BB.

If the value of DD is a finite set, then under each assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} satisfying γ\gamma, {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} is finite.

Let CC be a class of which every subset of BB is an element; for instance, when BB is a set, its power set P(B)\mathcal{P}(B). Then {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\}, the term under γ\gamma whose value under each assignment satisfying γ\gamma is the class above, is a term of type CC under γ\gamma. Here bound occurrences count: a set variable zz does not occur in {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} when zz is not uu, is not DD, and does not occur in tt, bound or free.

Let CC be as in the clause typed, let zz be a set variable that is none of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, is not free in γ\gamma and does not occur in {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\}, bound occurrences counting, and let θ\theta be a predicative formula expressing the condition γ∧z={t:u∈D}\gamma\wedge z=\{t:u\in D\}. Under every assignment of sets to x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k} satisfying γ\gamma, exactly one set zz satisfies θ\theta; so {t:u∈D}\{t:u\in D\} is a defined set symbol with arguments x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, given by θ\theta and used properly where γ\gamma holds. It may stand as the expression written t(u)t(u) in Maps and Relations Given by Formulas §map and in Predicative Formulas for Suprema and Infima, and Maps Defined by Suprema and Infima §maps in the following way. One of x1,…,xkx_{1},\dots,x_{k}, say xjx_{j}, is taken as the uu there; the other variables xix_{i}, i≠ji\neq j, are parameters fixed at sets for which γ\gamma holds whenever an element of the set aa there is put for xjx_{j}; and, for the first of the two clauses, this is provided the values lie in a set bb, which holds for C=P(B)C=\mathcal{P}(B) when BB is a set, with b=P(B)b=\mathcal{P}(B).
